We, the undersigned, are people with hearing loss and members of the local deaf
community. We are writing in to commend MediaCorp on her implementation of
subtitling on the 9.30pm News program on Channel 5.
We have hearing loss of varying degrees, but one thing we share and face in our daily
life is the difficulty in catching speech, whether in person, over the phone or on
television. People with profound hearing loss, in particular, have too little residual
hearing to be able to understand speech at all.
Hence, the provision of subtitling on the English new program has been a boon to all of
us in the community. Making the news accessible to us - people with deafness - via
subtitling has enabled us to keep in touch with current affairs and developments more
easily, and granted us equal access to crucial updates and breaking news via televised
media.
Once again, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to MediaCorp for her social
consciousness, for being pro-actively deaf-friendly and for blazing a path in ensuring
accessibility to media for people with disabilities.
